Empowering education by teaching at the right level

A recent study revealed a sobering reality: nearly eight in ten learners struggle to read for meaning by Grade 4. In partnership with the Zero Dropout Campaign, we launched the Reading for Meaning and Maths Matters programs based on the Teaching at the Right Level (TARL) method in response to this pressing issue.

Recognising the multifaceted nature of the challenge, TARL adopts an accelerated catch-up approach, designed to equip learners with essential skills within a short timeframe.

TARL focuses on bridging foundational literacy and numeracy gaps that hinder academic progress. By condensing essential learning objectives from Grades 1 to 3 into a comprehensive six- to eight-month program, TARL empowers learners to catch up on missed milestones and build a strong educational foundation. Central to TARL’s success is their dedication to well-trained facilitators, ongoing mentorship, and the active involvement of schools and parents in the learning process.

Understanding the crucial role of language in learning, TARL adopts a bilingual approach in schools served by the Letsatsi Solar Park Trust. By ensuring learners understand the language of instruction, TARL not only enhances literacy skills but also facilitates success across all subjects.

The program was launched in both Kagisano Combined School and Tshomarelo Primary School in 2023 and is implemented in collaboration with the National Association of Child Care Workers (NACCW). TARL provides personalised support to learners, with each facilitator working closely with a group of 40 students. By assessing individual learning levels and tailoring instruction accordingly, TARL works hard to ensure that no child is left behind.

Despite challenges such as low attendance and parental disengagement, to date, TARL has witnessed remarkable progress. The majority of learners attending the program have demonstrated significant improvement in literacy skills, with many advancing one or two levels within the program. While challenges persist in mathematics, TARL remains committed to building foundational skills and fostering a culture of academic achievement.

Through 2023, nearly a quarter of students improved their literacy by 1 or 2 levels. Literacy levels increased on average by nearly 10%. We went from over 67% of enrolled learners sitting at beginner and syllable level in home language down to 38% after 60 sessions. There was a more than 10% increase in numeracy through the sessions.

The impact of TARL extends beyond academic progress, as evidenced by heartening stories of recognition and success. Learners who once struggled academically are now receiving awards for improved performance, affirming the efficacy of TARL’s efforts and instilling hope for a brighter future.

Through TARL, the Letsatsi Solar Park Trust continues to uphold its commitment to quality education and community empowerment. By investing in programs like TARL, the Trust is not only improving academic outcomes but also nurturing a generation of resilient, empowered youth ready to seize opportunities and shape their own destinies.
